Camp: Guaoli, Jhansi(UP)Date: 22nd December 2009Time: 11:00 AM
It is said seeing is believing. But, for Rekha Devi, a marginalised landless woman of remote Guaoli village in Babina Block on Monday evening the sudden arrival of Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi left her in quite bewilderment.
She could not believe in first instance to have Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi within the confinement of her mud-hut with no basic amenities to qualify even as a household. But, then finding Congress General Secreatry Rahul Gandhi in her mud hut, made her astonishingly jubilant, a fact she termed something as ‘unimaginable’ and the reality something as ‘magical’.
After attending a meeting with women self-help groups in the locality, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi moved to Rekha Devi’s house and had discussions about the family and the problems being faced by them. Her husband Dwarika Prasad Raikwar works as labourer in a factory in Haryana and had returned to his house in Koni Purva hamlet just a day before.
Guaoli village has a population of 1,443 in its 400 households, out of which around 70 households are in Koni Purva hamlet of Rekha Devi. Majority belong to ‘Kevat’ community, traditionally dependent on boating on nearby Betwa river, for livelihood.
The food already cooked for evening in Rekha Devi’s house comprised ‘Arhar Dal, fried peas, rice, roti and muli’. Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi shared the dinner with Rekha Devi and her husband sitting on the mud floor, much to the astonishment of the poor family.
During one and half hour stay in the hut, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi discussed with them the problems and various ways and means for much-needed upliftment of marginalized and landless households, including theirs, in the region.
Earlier, Congress General Secretary had a meeting with about 30 women of three women self-help groups, like ‘Jai Durge Ma’ and others. Rekha Devi having education upto class eight, leads one such self help group in her village.
Discussions by Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi with the women of these self-help groups largely revolved around development, progress status of NREGA and its contribution towards uplift of down-trodden marginalized population in the region. Women self-help groups are functional under Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Vikas Pariyojna.
From Bundelkhand, Congress General Secretary went on to visit Amethi and Raebareli to attend a series of meetings. Regards,www.pressbrief.in
