General Dentistry in New Jersey
Article by Evan Langsted
Good dentists provide each of their patients with the individual attention and care they deserve, no matter what their specialty is. Many cosmetic dentists focus their practice on providing all encompassing dental care to their patients, because without continual attention to general dental health, your restorative efforts will not result in lasting and satisfying results.
What is General Dentistry?General dentistry encompasses the study and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the mouth, jaw and face. Procedures are surgical and non-surgical in nature and involve four steps in their process which include evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.Depending on the procedures needed to treat your individual condition(s), you may meet and work with several different professionals when you have dental work performed. Among these people may be one or more of the following:
* Your dentist* Your dental hygienist* The dental technicians involved in your procedures* The dental assistants who aid your dentist during your procedures* Dental therapists who may be involved in specialized treatments
Common Treatments in General DentistryThe prevention of, and treatment and surgery of, decaying teeth is the prominent practice of the general dentist. Common procedures performed by the general dentist include any of the following:
* Porcelain Fillings* Dental Crowns* Dental Bonding* Dental Bridges* Tooth removal
These procedures are all used to maintain and repair the patient’s natural teeth and are practiced by most general dentists. There is a certain level of dental skill that every dentist must meet in order to graduate and earn their dental license. These disciplines include routine periodontic, routine endodontic, restorative, exodontic, prosthetic and general dental examination. Many general dentists are experienced and comfortable with removing wisdom teeth, placing dental implants and some complex cases. Others choose to refer their patients to a specialist for these types of procedures.Specialized DentistryFor patients that require more specific dental care, their general dentist will likely refer them to a specialist. Specialized care may involve maxillofacial treatments or surgeries which involve treatment of the jaw and face as well as the teeth. Technological advancements in dentistry allow specialists to evaluate, diagnose and treat misaligned bite (malocclusion) and TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction) problems which can cause constant oral pain and other debilitating side effects.Preventative DentistryPreventative dentistry is an integral part of any dental care program. This is the regular care and treatment of the teeth in order to avoid more serious problems that may require specialized care down the road. Preventative dentistry requires the patient to remain educated and diligent in their own dental care regime between routine dental visits. The more informed the patient remains in terms of preventative oral care, the less likely more involved treatments and problem issues will be of any concern. The best practices for preventative oral care between visits include regular tooth brushing with toothpaste containing fluoride and flossing.
