When the iceberg was spotted the famed First Officer Maddock gave the order to turn, but did so in tiller orders. The wheelman was young. He had been trained in rudder orders. In a panic the two did not realize they had spoke in two different languages and the ship was steered right into the iceberg.

The second order was more deadly. Bruce Ismay, chairman of the White Star Line, was on board the Titanic. He did not want his investment to sink slowly to the bottom or be towed into port bad publicity. So he gave the order to keep going ahead slow. Had the ship sat still it would have floated until help arrived. But because it moved ahead the water rushed in making the bow heavy and driving it to a quick watery grave.
